STOP SCRATCHING! WAIT – IT COULD BE FLEAS?

Fully grown, the flea is between 1.5mm and 3.3mm. Being brown or black, fleas are often mistaken for dirt specks. This makes them hard to detect.

Chambers Pest Solutions recommends the following to prevent a flea infestation:

  • Vacuum carpet, rugs and upholstered furniture daily to
  • Regularly wash and replace pet bedding
  • pick up all stages of flea life cycle – adults, eggs and larvae
  • Insert an anti-flea device into the vacuum bag to prevent the insects from developing within the machine, then discard the vacuum bag wheh done
  • Mop all non-carpeted floors daily
  • Mow grass short regularly

It is imperative that you work on fixing an infestation immediately because fleas cause ongoing damage and trauma to your pets. This trauma is known as Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD) and happens when the pet’s skin reacts to the anti-coagulant contained in the flea saliva. Resulting restlessness and discomfort causes weight loss and fur loss potentially leading to more severe health concerns.

Once you discover fleas, it is advisable to book in with the vet who will instigate a direct treatment program for your pets. The vet will also examine the pet for any further health concerns like infection.

Check your pets often – especially pay attention to the back, inner thighs and lower abdomen. If your pet has fleas you will see red bites, raised and irritated skin, scabs and black and brown specks that appear to move. Due to the prolific nature of fleas, trained professionals are required to successfully and quickly eradicate the pest and cease infestation in your family home.

Chambers Pest Solutions utilises active flea management treatments. We use only the safest and most efficient methods to apply specialised flea pesticides and insecticides. Both indoor and outdoor areas are treated meaning immediate control of the flea infestation. We also utilise Insect Growth Regulators (IGR’s) which break the flea’s life cycle by preventing larvae from developing and by making adults sterile.

The warmer the weather, the worse the fleas. We all spend more time outside during summer but be aware this pest will also bite humans, potentially transferring bacteria and disease to your family.
