Although around the world a number of Mice species have contact with humans in Australia this is limited to the common house mouse. House Mice can survive in the presence of very little water and reduced food supplies, they are generally nocturnal hence you are more likely to be alerted to the presence of Mice by their faecal droppings which are small pellet shaped and brown in colour. Visually they are generally medium to dark brown in colour, they have a long soft hairless tail and their teeth structure includes molars and chisel like incisors. They are fast runners and are often seen running along the side of walls from one hiding place to another.

Life Cycle of Mice

The female mouse can have up to 14 young per litter although the average is around 7. As a mouse can reach sexual maturity within a couple of months and can have up to 10 litters per year under ideal conditions a population explosion can occur. This can result in a mouse plague although this affects the agricultural zones where grain crops are grown more then residential areas.

Habits

Mice are generally more are active during nights and capable of passing through holes as small as 1/4-inch in diameter. They generally live within a small colony with one dominant male and several females and young. Although they primarily feed on plant matter they are omnivorous when meat is available.

Damage caused by Mice

Mice can cause a fair bit of damage to upholstery, furniture, paper products etc when looking for nesting materials, they can also cause damage to food and food packaging when looking for food. They are also known carriers of a number of diseases which can be transmitted through inhalation of dust particles contaminated with mouse’s urine or faecal matter.
